Answering a Reader Question #425

Hi Dania!
Do comercial/print and fashion/runway make about the same amount of money?

Hi, Erik T!

The easy answer to your question is "no." Commercial/print gigs are very high paying if you have an agent that is working with national, recognized brands/clients. They're the ones that pay the big bucks for things like print campaigns, ads, etc. Some of the castings I've been to for clients like Verizon start their day rate for models at $2,500...$1,500 at the lowest...maybe $800 minimum.

For the average working fashion/runway model, such pay rates are few and far in between unless you've booked a major ad campaign or brand. Keep in mind, I'm talking about the everyday working fashion/runway model, not the supermodels. Of course they get the higher end of the pay scale no matter what project they're on.

Editorial modeling gigs only pay between $100-$300 per shoot. That's because they're the "filler" pages in high fashion magazines. While editorial models are representing high end designer brands, because the final product is just used for run-of-the-mill advertisement pages in publications, the pay scale is a lot lower. Runway models typically work their way up the pay scale but most make a few hundred per show.

Although commercial/print modeling jobs pay exceedingly well (again, if you are agency represented and submitted to work for nationally recognized brands/companies) the competition for those assignments is very steep because at best the actual shoot may only need 1 or a few models. So it's difficult to consistently nail those well paying print jobs.

On the flip side, fashion and runway work for the everyday working model is on the lower end of the pay scale by comparsion BUT there is a greater opportunity to consistently book those jobs on a regular basis.

  1. Hi, Dania!
I want to tell my parents that I want to do commercial/print modelling but I don't know what to tell them D: I read your commercial/print posts and I understand it but I don't know how to pass that info to my parents. Also, english is not their first language for them so they aren't very good at it. How should I explain it to them? What should I say to them so that they view it in much of a positive way as possible?

    Please help and thank you
