Answering a Reader Question #726

Yancie Wrote: Hi Dania,  I am 24yrs young and stand 5'9'' tall and weigh 145. I am very proportioned I am just a little bottom heavy. When i was 16-18 i did run way but I know i can not do that now because my measurements are 31.5-29-45 I wear a size 6-8 in dresses. What type of modeling should i pursue besides eye candy like everyone tries to put me in because of my hips? Hey there, Yancie! Go for commercial/print and/or lifestyle. The height and size requirements are much more flexible for agencies that represent these divisions. All they care about is that you're proportional and healthy in appearance. So check out agencies local to you that have commercial/print and/or lifestyle categories you can apply to. Lifestyle is essentially commercial/print but specifically for models in their mid 20s and older. Some agencies have these two divisions separate, while others use them to mean the same thing. Regardless, if either or both of these terms appear on the

Catt Wrote: Is it weird that I have an amazon shopping cart with ankle weights in them? ;-) I'm getting the 1lb ones but I'm wondering if I should make them heavier? Thanks for the post Dania! xx xxx, Catt Hey there, Catt! If you have the ability to test the 1 pound weights in the store, try them out and see what you think then try 3-5 pound weights and compare. You don't want the weights to be so heavy that it actually affects how you walk or makes you walk funny. You just want a bit of resistance because they'll be for walking, not regular exercise or other strenuous activity. Hope that helps!

Modeling 101 Skype Group Chat This Sunday 3/23

Making a quick announcement that I'm planning on scheduling the first Modeling 101 Skype group chat for this Sunday, March 23. Time is TBD but will likely be after 5pm PST (please take note for those of you in different time zones). There's a really important step you need to follow if you want to be a part of this group chat:  you have to add me on Skype: dania.denise No add, no group chat. I doubt many of you want to post your Skype usernames in the comments section of this blog post so that I can add you myself but if you're cool with making that info public, feel free and I'll send a request to connect. Or you can email me your Skype username directly to keep it private: daniadenise@gmail.com. Regardless of the total turnout, I will make sure to host the group chat for those that do want to take advantage of the opportunity to talk about modeling related topics and receive advice, assistance and answers to questions. Only members of the group will know e

Devonna Wrote: Question, Michele pommier has me paying for a test shoot but I didn't sign anything? Scam? Hi, Devonna! From what I know, Michele Pommier has been around for a long time, although I don't know anyone personally or professionally who is signed with them so I can't speak from experience, unfortunately. I'm curious as to why they asked you to do a test shoot but without offering a contract first. They may just want to see the professional photos to assess your potential as a model but in most cases that all comes after the contract's been signed or if there is some kind of trial period, which I have heard happens sometimes. This could be an example of such a thing. Are they charging you directly for the test shoot because it's one of their photographers they want you to shoot with? Or have they given you the option of finding your own photographer? Paying for a shoot with one of their photographers and making that requirement mandatory in

Anonymous Wrote: Hello Hello! Hi Dania! I'm just going to ask a really random question ahahaha When models go for casting calls or get their sizes measured or go to open call(before they actually become models), do they wear a bra with paddings or without paddings? My friend and I were talking about models and we somehow got onto this topic lol. So we thought that we'd ask you :) So...what kind of bra do they wear?? Thank you and sorry for such a random question! Hey, hey, hey, Anonymous (and friend)! No apologies necessary, I'm a fan of random, lol. :-) For castings calls, which is when a model is going to meet a client in the hopes of getting hired for a gig, it usually doesn't matter what kind of bra they're wearing. Padded or not, if measurements are taken during the casting itself, the person doing the measuring will simply take the bust size with whatever bra the model happens to be wearing. For open calls, where the models are visiting an agen

Anonymous Wrote: Can you wear a little bit of concealer and mascara in your modeling snapshots?  Hi, Anonymous! For modeling snapshots that you send to agencies you can wear concealer if you've got pesky blemishes but keep it minimal. I wouldn't advise mascara because the agencies want to see what you look like naturally. Light mascara is okay most times but I've found that many girls don't know how to apply mascara "lightly," lol. But if you can manage to only apply a little bit of mascara then go ahead but keep it light.

Anonymous Wrote: Hi, Dania! I want to tell my parents that I want to do commercial/print modelling but I don't know what to tell them D: I read your commercial/print posts and I understand it but I don't know how to pass that info to my parents. Also, english is not their first language for them so they aren't very good at it. How should I explain it to them? What should I say to them so that they view it in much of a positive way as possible?  Please help and thank you  Hey, Anonymous! I think the best way you can get across to your parents what type of modeling you want to do is by showing them examples, such as the ones I have on my blog post, "Understanding Commercial/Print Modeling."  Even better, the next time you're in a store (retail, department or even the grocery store), point out to your parents the pictures of models that appear on the product packaging of various items in the store and tell them that's the kind of modeling you'
