Answering a Reader Question #642

I'm an aspiring male model and I was wondering if you knew how much male models get paid for high fashion shows, ads, and campaigns. And for normal print modeling. THANKS!

Hi, Anonymous!

There is no specific, set in stone rate that list how much male models make, unfortunately. Each project is different and payment rates depend on the client's budget, as well as other important factors. If a male model books a gig through his agent, the rate could be higher than if he got the assignment on his own. However, experience also plays a role in how much a client would be willing to pay.

Newer male models could expect to make a few hundred dollars for a high fashion show or may only get offered free merchandise/store credit as compensation (the lowest paying shows sometimes only offer $100, if not less). More experienced models that are in demand by designers will get paid more, especially if chosen to walk in more than one show. In this situation, a male model could make $500+.

Ads tend to pay less, sometimes as much as $150 per ad shoot. This is the case for editorial modeling ads like the kind that you see in high fashion magazines. Those types of shoots generally pay between $150-$300 per day for an 8-10 hour assignment.

Campaigns do carry bigger paychecks if the client is a recognized brand/name. The actual pay rate would be negotiated between the model's agent and the company but could start at $800 and easily go higher.

Print modeling varies just like the other types of work male models get. A male catalog model could earn $150/hour or a flat day rate could be negotiated that could be worth a few hundred dollars or more per day.

Again, these figures aren't set in stone but are typical rates I've come across. For a male model who freelances and finds his own work without the assistance of an agent, the pay rates vary widely and are usually negotiated between the model and the client.

  1. Ive heard from friends of mine who've done campaigns for example Tommy hillifinger and made 80,000$ and easily over 100,000. Is that rate usually for just really well known models or? Thanks!

  2. The more well known or in demand a model is, the higher pay rate they'll get. Sometimes newer male models can get that type of earning power if a client/designer/brand really loves their look so it isn't entirely out of the question for a new face just getting into the industry to also get high rates...maybe not that high as the ones you mentioned but definitely $1,000+.

It's certainly possible for a male model to earn that much from a campaign and is expected when modeling for a brand like Tommy Hilfiger. The agencies have a lot to do with it, too. They negotiate to make sure their models receive the best pay for assignments. I've never heard of a freelance male model getting hired for a notable brand like T.H. and making that kind of money on their own.

It all boils down to look, demand, experience/reputation and what their agency is able to work out.
