Answering a Reader Question #883

Hi, I am going to college in LA and I want to become a model so I am sending photos to different managements and I wanted to send photos to managements in New York. Would I be able to stay in LA or would I have to move?

Hey, Anonymous!

Many agencies have offices in both LA and NYC so that would be the best case scenario where you'd easily be able to work in both markets if the agency in LA feels that would be in your best interest and that of the agency's.

However, if you sign with an agency in LA that doesn't have an office in NYC, then you would be dealing with two different agencies in two different markets (if a New York agency wanted to sign you as well).

I really wouldn't advise submitting to New York agencies if you know you realistically wouldn't be able to spend much time working in that market and aren't willing to relocate. Many agencies require models to be within a 2 hour's drive from where you live, however, on occasion some agencies do sign models that don't live in the immediate area. They usually just tell the model to give them a heads up as to a time frame when they would plan on being in the NYC area for a while so that the agency can start submitting the model for castings and work while they are local and accessible.

Because you're in LA for college, I wouldn't recommend submitting to agencies across the country because if you do find an NYC agency that is okay with your living situation, you'd have to be committed to missing classes whenever they'd want you to fly and attend a casting or modeling job.

More food for thought is the fact that your flight, transportation and accommodations would not be covered by the agency for castings and auditions (if you book the job, that's different). So not only would it be inconvenient timing-wise for you, it would be expensive as well.

I would suggest sticking with LA agencies to keep you close to school conveniently but look for LA agencies that are also in NYC to make any work you get in that market easier to accomplish since your LA agent would know your situation and will submit you accordingly.

Hope that helps!
