Answering a Reader Question #874

Hi Dania! I have no experience in modeling but I have always loved fashion and the idea of modeling. I have been invited to an agency interview this tuesday. My question is, is there any hope or place for a model who wants to be on the modest side of dressing as a model? Meaning requesting not to wear bikinis, short skirts, super low cut shirts.... thanks for your advise!

Hi, Anonymous!

It depends on the type of modeling you want to do. Commercial/print is known for being "family friendly" and not requiring showing a lot of skin.

Fashion, runway and editorial modeling often comes with that territory you're referring to. While agencies will respect a model's decision to be on the more modest side, for them that means the fewer gigs they can submit you for. That means they can't fully market you the way they would like.

All the things you are not okay with doing, many other models will have no problem with and an agency won't hesitate to make the choice that best serves their needs so be prepared for that as a possible outcome.

However, if you want to have the best of both worlds, I would suggest pursuing commercial/print modeling instead. If the agency you're interviewing with has a print division, mention your interest in that category and see if they'd be willing to represent you for that type of work.

No agency would force you to do something you're uncomfortable with and oftentimes will have you fill out a short questionnaire that asks what you will/won't do in terms of things like nudity, implied nudity, alcohol, fur, tobacco products, etc. So they do care about your limitations but as long as you are honest yet willing to compromise, I don't see why they wouldn't still want to bring you on board. There's a difference between being flexible and being difficult.

Best of luck with your interview on Tuesday!
