If you have the ability to test the 1 pound weights in the store, try them out and see what you think then try 3-5 pound weights and compare.
You don't want the weights to be so heavy that it actually affects how you walk or makes you walk funny. You just want a bit of resistance because they'll be for walking, not regular exercise or other strenuous activity.
